Caerphilly Outdoor Learning Wales Network Group

The Caerphilly OLW network group is an active group comprising several teaching staff, as well as representatives from the Caerphilly Countryside Service and Natural Resources Wales.

Members benefit from:
  • Sharing new ideas and networking
  • Finding out about free services and opportunities within the county
  • Advice on using the outdoors for learning and improving school grounds
  • Information on Forest School and other outdoor training courses
  • Funding opportunities and group projects

Meetings are held once each school term at different schools. The location is varied to give everyone the chance to attend and meetings provide an opportunity to share ideas and information about funding sources and updates on training opportunities.  New members are always welcome.

Thanks to OLW funding over the last few years, members of the group have benefitted from a wide range of free events, resources, workshops and school trips for their classes.
Some examples include:

  • Willow crafts workshop for teachers
  • Woodland Olympics event for children at Aberbargoed Grasslands
  • 'ICT in the outdoors' course
  • 'Literacy & Numeracy in the Outdoors' workshop for teachers and their classes
  • Purchasing of tools and equipment to help with Forest School delivery
  • 'Crafty Gardening Ideas' course
  • Big School Birdwatch events
  • 'Building a living willow structure' workshop
  • A launch event for the new name 'Caerphilly OLW'  involved 2 days of outdoor activities at Parc Penallta for 6 member schools
  • Workshops learning how to make puppets and how to use them to bring stories to life
  • An adult training day at the seaside learning about the coastal environment and new activites to do with FP and KS2 classes
  • An interesting twilight 'Hedgehog School' workshop.
